Baldwin Doubles Up Paxon For First Win Of The Season
The Baldwin Indians hosted the Paxon Golden Eagles Tuesday night in their first game of the 2017 season. The Golden Eagles held a 5-1 lead entering the bottom half of the fifth, but a three-run home run from Kaivon Kohn capped a seven-run sixth inning for the Indians, who pulled away with a 12-6 victory.
Josh Deal got things going for the Golden Eagles (0-1) in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run over the center-field wall that brought home Will VanSickle. Heading into the fifth inning with a 2-1 lead, the Golden Eagles added three more runs for a commanding 5-1 lead. First, a Dylan Radar single brought home Sammie Coffrin and then a double from Will VanSickle scored Ben VanSickle to bring the lead to three. Will VanSickle scored his second run of the game to cap the scoring in the top half of the fifth.
The Indians (1-0) entered the bottom of the fifth inning facing a four-run deficit but a lead-off walk to John Hargrove got them moving in the right direction. Two batters later, Hargrove scored the first run of the inning on a passed ball. A sac-fly from Trent Hausler and back-to-back RBI singles from Scott Seigler and Cameron Carlyle tied the game at five.
The Indians’ scoring onslaught continued in the bottom of the sixth inning. Runs from Carrington Lockett, Hargrove, Conner Aspinwall and Colton Mcree stretched the lead to 9-5. Two at-bats later, with two outs, Kaivon Kohn put the game away with a three-run shot to center field that scored Hausler and Dakota Goodman.
Dawson Riddle went the distance for the Indians. After a couple up-and-down innings, Riddle was locked-in during his final two. Four of Riddle’s nine strikeouts came in the final two innings, while only allowing one run. Riddle ended the night only throwing 71 pitches for the complete-game victory.
