Grand Slam Blasts Ponte Vedra Over Undefeated Bolles
The Ponte Vedra Sharks were on the road Tuesday to take on the undefeated Bolles Bulldogs in non-district play. The Sharks scored early and led throughout the game but a grand slam from Quinton Brehm in the seventh inning made a comeback nearly impossible and they held on for the 7-2 victory over the Bulldogs.
Jacob Young’s first of two runs on the night opened the scoring for the Sharks (2-1) in the first inning. Quinton Brehm increased the lead to two runs in the third inning with a RBI double that scored Thomas Barnhorst. This was the first of Brehm’s five-RBI on the night.
The Bulldogs (3-1) couldn’t get anything going against Sharks’ starter Kevin Faulkner. They managed just one hit against the starter, and only three on the entire night. Faulkner went four innings, allowing just the one hit and walking two, while striking out four. Faulkner turned the ball over to Duncan VanKouteren who struck out two in 1.1 innings.
A Max Ferguson RBI single in the seventh finally got the Bulldogs on the board. A wild pitch during the next at-bat brought home Bryson Kirksey for the second run of the game but the damage had already been done in the top half of the inning. With Noah Bunkosky, Barnhorst and Young loading the bases for the Sharks, Brehm homered on a line-drive to left field to give the Sharks a commanding seven-run lead.
The lead proved to be insurmountable for the Bulldogs. After coming in to pitch in the sixth and allowing two runs in the seventh with two outs, it took just one pitch for Jack Hahnemann to induce a fly-out to end the game. Hanhnemann finished the night allowing two runs on two hits, while striking out four batters to secure the victory against the previously undefeated Bulldogs.
